Dimensional verification and part fit

Plan an inspection fixture around the features that determine whether an automotive part fits and functions. GPTMOLD reviews fixture and gauge enquiries using the part drawing, datums and agreed inspection method.

A useful fixture brief explains how the part is located, held and checked, and how results will be recorded. Start with the drawing revision and the customer acceptance requirements.

Define what the fixture must check

Location and support

Identify datum references, locating points, support areas and the required part condition during measurement. Include assembly context and any flexible or easily distorted areas.

Measurement and access

Mark the features, gaps, profiles or positions to be verified. Confirm whether checks use gauges, indicators, CMM access or another agreed method.

Use and acceptance

Describe loading, clamping, handling and operator access. Agree reference checks, identification, inspection records and the process for accepting the completed fixture.

What to include in your enquiry

  • Current part drawing, CAD model and relevant assembly data
  • Datum scheme, tolerances and the specific features to be checked
  • Required measurement method and any customer fixture standard
  • Loading, clamping, handling and inspection-frequency requirements
  • Acceptance procedure, deliverables and target timing

Measurement capability, repeatability studies, calibration and any customer-specific approval package must be agreed for the project.
