Overmolding

Substrate and overmold tooling

Develop overmolding tooling around the substrate, the added material and the function of their interface. GPTMOLD reviews hard-plastic, soft-touch, metal-insert and sealing component enquiries.

A useful brief shows what must be held in position, where the overmold is allowed to flow and how the finished part will be tested. Agree those requirements before selecting the mold layout and loading method.

Discuss Overmolding Tooling

Make the interface the starting point

Substrate and retention

Provide the substrate material, dimensional range and supply condition. Mark locating surfaces, retention features and areas that must remain free of overmold material. Review how the substrate will be supported during molding.

Material and molding route

Specify the overmold grade, hardness, color and service conditions. Review material compatibility and the proposed loading, molding and removal sequence. If the component is produced in two shots, include the first-shot tool and machine requirements.

Sealing, feel and acceptance

Define the surfaces responsible for sealing, grip, appearance or protection. Specify bond or retention checks and any functional tests. Discuss acceptable flash, parting lines and gate marks before the tool concept is approved.

What to include in your enquiry

  • CAD data for the substrate, overmold region and complete assembly
  • Substrate and overmold material specifications, including supply condition
  • Locating features, shut-off boundaries, retention details and critical dimensions
  • Appearance, bond, sealing or other functional acceptance requirements
  • Expected volume, loading method, sample quantity and timing

A material combination or soft-touch surface does not by itself establish bond strength, sealing performance or suitability for a regulated application. Confirm the tests and documentation for the project.
