Insert Molding

Plan the insert and plastic as one assembly

Start an insert molding enquiry with the component, its function, and the interface that must remain controlled.

Insert molding places a component into the mold before plastic is injected around it. The insert may provide a thread, contact, support, or other functional feature. A useful tooling brief defines which areas must be covered, which must remain exposed, and how the finished assembly will be evaluated. Share both the insert drawing and the surrounding plastic geometry so that the review addresses their relationship.

Discuss Your Project

Three considerations before tooling

Insert location and loading

Identify the surfaces used to locate the insert, its orientation, and the proposed loading method. Include insert dimensional variation and any handling restrictions. The tooling discussion should cover how the insert is held in position and how its presence can be checked.

Plastic and insert interface

State the resin grade, insert material, and the purpose of the joint. Flag sealing, pull-out resistance, electrical isolation, or cosmetic requirements where relevant. Do not assume encapsulation alone establishes a required bond or performance level.

Part release and acceptance

Mark exposed threads, contacts, and other protected areas. Discuss gate and parting-line locations, allowable flash, and removal of the completed assembly. Define the measurements and functional checks needed to decide whether trial parts are acceptable.

What to include in your enquiry

  • Current plastic-part model and dimensioned insert drawing
  • Resin grade, insert material, and intended operating environment
  • Critical dimensions, protected surfaces, and interface requirements
  • Expected quantities, insert supply responsibilities, and loading preference
  • Sample evaluation criteria and required project documentation

Review and acceptance planning

Material compatibility, insert retention, tooling scope, and any test requirements need project-specific review. Process suitability and performance must be confirmed against agreed acceptance criteria.
